The Framework

Here's how it actually works.

01

Identify a problem.

Insights during exit interviews are too late. Find out the complaints before people feel they need to leave.

02

Ask “do I like this.”

“Do I like this?” only works when someone actually says it in the room.

03

Change one thing.

Small fixes compound. Make this part of your company DNA.

Most improvement starts as irritation. The discipline is saying it out loud, then doing something small about it.

About me

About me

I'm a San Francisco native.

I attended Cal Berkeley and studied music and computer science, which sounds like an odd pair until you realize both are about structure.

My brother Alex and I have been business partners since 1991.

The TL;DR

Turning decades into tl;dr

Most leadership books tell you to add things. More meetings, more tracking software, more oversight. IT taught me the opposite: speed isn't running faster, it's removing friction.

Find it, fix it once, and it stops being your problem. That's the heart of my book, Push Button Management.

Friction doesn't vanish, though. It lands on whoever's doing the technical work. That's the other book: It's A Hard Job.

Get me in the room

I talk about what running IT for other people taught me about running my own — and why the technology is almost never the problem.
